What Stripe actually does

Stripe is the gold standard of internet payments. The API is the cleanest in fintech, the documentation is best-in-class, and the platform has expanded from card processing into Stripe Tax, Stripe Billing, Stripe Connect (marketplaces), Stripe Capital (lending), and Stripe Issuing (card issuing). If you're building an online business, you start with Stripe.

Who it's for: Any online business taking card payments — SaaS, ecommerce, marketplaces, and any developer building a checkout flow.

Key features

💳 Card processing in 47 countries

Accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, JCB, UnionPay, and 100+ local payment methods. One API.

🧠 Stripe Radar (AI fraud)

🔄 Stripe Billing & subscriptions

🌍 Stripe Connect (marketplaces)

The honest take

✓ What works

  • The cleanest API in fintech (period)
  • Best documentation in the industry
  • Expands with you: Tax, Billing, Connect, Issuing, Capital
  • AI fraud detection (Radar) is industry-leading
  • Supports every payment method globally

✗ What doesn't

  • Per-transaction pricing adds up for SMBs (2.9% + 30¢)
  • Account holds can be aggressive for "high-risk" categories
  • No phone support on Standard plan (chat/email only)
  • Stripe Tax costs extra

Verdict

Stripe is the default for online payments. If you're a developer building a SaaS or ecommerce business, Stripe is the right choice 95% of the time. For low-volume offline businesses, Square is simpler. For high-risk categories, payment processors like PaymentCloud are more flexible.
